Next up in our series of Low Latency solution providers is nanocosmos with their live streaming platform nanoStream Cloud. nanocosmos was founded by Oliver Lietz (CEO) in 1999. It was bootstrapped, although funding in the dotcom period would have been fairly easy. As a result, they have no external investors which allows them to do what they believe is important. Today they have over 30 employees, mainly located in Germany from where they support a global customer base including North America and East Asia. On a Friday evening sometime at the end of June I interviewed Chris Strijbosch, VP Business Development from nanocosmos

The interview is conducted using their own video-meeting software nanoMeet – their latest addition to their low latency live streaming platform nanoStream Cloud, which also allows me to record the session. And immediately I have a first question: “Is this the new Zoom, WebEx or Meet?” The answer is clear: nanocosmos has a different objective, and competing with these solutions would only distract them from their own vision.”

Chris Strijbosch: What is our vision at nanocosmos? Our vision has always been: only B2B and only services where audience engagement, interactivity or monetization play a role. We started years ago with ultra low latency live streaming, when Flash was the only option. But regardless, we already decided back then that we wanted to focus our solution nanoStream Cloud on ultra low latency, around 1 second end-to-end. The biggest challenge to deliver live streams in ultra low latency is the complete end-to-end control from the camera all the way to the player.

Raskenlund: How does your solution differ from other solutions?

Strijbosch: For most streaming media companies, setting up a live streaming service or platform is too complex. And that’s why we approach things differently. We want to accomplish both: very easy, extremely simple in use and in parallel offer an extremely high SLA, close to 100% up-time. Our customers should never be worried about their solution so they can focus on their core business: monetizing their content. Hence, we allow partners like Raskenlund to customize and integrate our solution for our end customers, so it becomes their solution and it supports their specific requirements, their colors, their name.

What contribution is required on the partner’s side? The partner needs a little bit of web-based development on the ingest side, and a little bit of web-based development on the player side and finally, they should bring along their cameras of course!

Raskenlund: If you heavily customize, don’t you risk introducing latency?

Strijbosch: With customization we mean branding and integration based on our B2B/white-label approach If you want to successfully live stream with low latency, you need to make sure you are in control of every component of the streaming chain process. Which means you need to own the ingest, the player and everything in between. Because if you don’t, you’ll allow latency to become part of it. Next to all these components we’ve built our own Live Stream Analytics solution, which allows us to measure outreach and potential issues where latency becomes an issue. While parties like Raskenlund focus on integration, we’ll focus our efforts on providing our customers the lowest latency possible based on a stable service platform.

Raskenlund: For what use cases is nanocosmos typically used?

Strijbosch: nanocosmos supports ultra-low latency solutions and ultra-low latency is only interesting when you’re offering interactivity. And we mean actual interactivity like a conversation, Q&A, quizzes, betting or gambling. You could say, I’m going to use ultra-low latency for a soccer game, or a live concert, but such content does not always require interactivity and hence will not benefit from ultra-low latency. However, enabling interaction creates a whole lot of new opportunities to monetize your content. Furthermore we support ≈ interactive conferences, town hall meetings, and even watch parties which is also used in professional environments to review content in a larger group. Everything where latency is key to support the user-experience of live video based interaction.

Raskenlund: how do you secure ultra-low latency? Do you support DRM for instance?

Strijbosch: Security is important for many customers in terms of encrypted transmission or limited access to specific user environments. We don’t use broadcast-style DRM. DRM is required if you want to stream blockbuster movies, but for an ultra-low latency solution like an interactive quiz, DRM is rarely a requirement. For a town hall meeting, we will protect the content through secure streaming and token based access.

Raskenlund: how do you keep your customers happy?

Strijbosch: We tend to put our focus on the success of the customers of our customers, which are the end users interacting with our video streams. If end users are happy, our customers are happy as well. That’s why we tend to call our customers partners, as we work together on a solution that offers a great live video experience. A self-service platform with the right tools, APIs and diagnostics plus additional support services create a unique customer experience. And that’s how we’re different. While most people only focus on the details and tend to lose sight of the bigger picture, it’s actually the bigger picture that counts.

Raskenlund: Thanks for your time Chris. nanocosmos technology does indeed offer a great end-to-end service for our customers. It has been a pleasure working with you and the rest of the team at nanocosmos.

Over the course of 2020 we’ve seen an abundance of blog posts, whitepapers, webinars and podcasts about low-latency streaming. All this information may be overwhelming, and some might even think: “what’s all this low-latency buzz about?”

On the one hand you have the technological advancements in the form of new streaming protocols (Apple LL-HLS, SRT, WebRTC), migration to the cloud, and new codecs , on the other hand – and maybe even more important – you have the solutions that make use of these technologies. For most businesses the question is not how a specific protocol performs, but: if I want to go low latency, (1) how low do we go and (2) what are my options?

In this series of articles, Raskenlund will try to give an answer to these questions. Starting with an easy-to-understand infopanel to position a specific solution. And we’ve reached out to the suppliers to ask them some questions about their solution.

What is Ceeblue?

Ceeblue makes incredibly fast & reliable live video streaming possible while handling all the modern protocols and scaling requirements our customers could ever require. We make sure that all viewers receive their content faster, and with a higher quality than is currently possible with any other service.

Ceeblue is perfectly positioned at the crossroads between the passive viewing video world that we’ve known for decades and the new interactivity demanded by so many fields (e-commerce, video conferencing, corporate communications, e-health, e-learning, online auctions, sports, betting, online games, etc.). Our cloud infrastructure makes it possible to serve sub-second video to any device, anywhere in the world, regardless of operating system or network quality.

What are the best use-cases for your solution?

We’re having a lot of fun learning about new markets and use cases since onboarding some new customers in the e-commerce, Entertainment, Live Auctions, and Virtual Events businesses. Beyond just video these verticals require INTERACTIVITY. And interactivity requires super-fast and reliable video that scales for specific events and delivers over long distances.

Right now, for example, we’re working with a company called FIRA Live, which aims to bring live e-commerce, much like China’s dominant TaoBao, to the West.

In one of their event formats there are multiple presenters promoting a particular product, either in the same location or remote. There’s a javascript overlay over the video with a chat, special offers, PiP, and a purchasing platform which doesn’t pull you away from the video even when you’re in your shopping cart or checking out. So you can still tune in. It’s really quite immersive.

It can connect you with both large platforms (think Amazon Live, but with half a minute less lag) as well as with artisanal Etsy-like shops. The chat, special offers and countdown features don’t allow for multiple seconds of lag, and we’re very happy to be helping FIRA take on the technical aspects of this incredibly challenging and promising project.

How is Ceeblue different from other streaming platforms?

We do the live transcode AND delivery in less than a second, which means that if you want to watermark your logo into a corner of the video, or transrate it in order to support lower-quality resolutions, we can take care of that for you without affecting delivery time.

And we can do this over great distances, between continents, even when using WebRTC, or when scaling into the thousands and thousands of viewers.

Amongst the Ultra-Low Latency (sub-1-second glass-to-glass) video providers, we stand out for the fact that our system just plain works. Unlike others, who focus on standard-issue WebRTC, we are able to consistently achieve high reliability because of our ability to handle all the modern video protocols (WebRTC, SRT, CMAF, etc.), including a unique WebRTC Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) solution and auto-scale capabilities for large numbers of ingests, viewership, and dispersed geographies.

This means that we can stream to hundreds of thousands or even millions of viewers anywhere in the world with no quality or scaling issues, which is nearly impossible to do with WebRTC implementations that don’t incorporate our proprietary solution (which amazingly remains standards-compliant).

But beyond our technical prowess, we’re the up-and-comers, and as such are far more flexible than the old, one-size-fits-all providers we compete with. This means we’re more hands-on with our customers, more willing to engineer new features into our cloud in order to help our customers realize the ideal video experience they envision. (For example, we’re finishing testing of UHD streaming at this very moment, a request from one of our larger international customers.)

Ceeblue’s Offering: Ceecoder & Ceecoder + Delivery

How does Ceeblue perform?

Ceeblue has a unique solution to scaling and latency. We terminate all incoming sessions on the ingest node, transcode and transrate, and then forward the stream(s) over SRT to a forward node, for relay or egress. Using our own flavour of command and control between the nodes makes our cloud infinitely scalable in any direction. Latency is not affected by the number of viewers.

Our load balancer will automatically spin up a VPS when the ingest or Egress group hits 50%.

Ceeblue’s unique solution also allows us to bake adaptive bitrate into our player even for WebRTC, and to include fallback protocols to kick in instantly whenever the first-choice protocol is underperforming.

We run our nodes at less than 50% to ensure connection in under one second in production.

We achieve consistent in-continent latency of around 200ms for WebRTC and segmented MP4/MKV over WebSockets to MSE, under 1 second for Low Latency HLS (LL-HLS).

How well does Ceeblue scale? How does it perform on longer ranges?

Very well! We have pre-deployed nodes in many parts of the globe, but we also have pop-up nodes that spin up and down to push our cloud edge even further out to cover all corners of the world. Our most recent successful application was for a North American customer looking to deliver to a small population of viewers in Australia – this was solved readily by spinning-up (and down) in Australia for those specific live streaming events.

As for scaling, there is no maximum limit to the number of viewers our system can sustain. If you foresee a million viewers for a particular event, no problem, we can handle that.

What are the costs associated with having your solution in production? How does the cost increase with consecutive streams?

Some of our customers use our fast live transcoding service outright and they pay us on a per ingest/month and/or per ingest/hour basis. Our ultra-low latency customers pay per ingest plus the data traffic delivered to their viewing audience.

Humanize Some history behind Ceeblue…

Well, we are a relatively “new kid on the block” as a company (founded in 2017 and opened for business in 2018). That being said, our team’s average age is well above what you might expect in such a young technology services company, and we have nearly a century of cumulative experience in the fields of networking, streaming and internet infrastructure.

In addition to being a bit more mature (*cough,* older) than our competitors, our company personality also has a bit of an “expats” profile, being that all but one of us are living in a country different from the one we were raised in; this helps us to really understand our clients who come from so many different countries, languages, and cultures from around the world. Every single day our entire team relies on the very technologies that we work so hard to perfect in order to keep in touch with our loved ones in far off lands. This is a labor very near to our heart!

Mobile phone views increased from 38.5% to 45.5%. Tablet views stayed relatively flat with a slight increase from 7.5% to 7.9%. Desktop views however fell with 12% to 47.2% from 53.6% Y/Y. In fact, mobile video traffic is forecast to increase at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 34% through 2024.

The “Rise of Mobile” has been a solid one, initially driven by Millenials and younger consumers who turned to mobile devices as their primary screen. But, older demographics have increasingly adopted these habits and are becoming mobile first too. This has been confirmed by several researches. For instance, a 2019 study from Pew Research Center found that 37% of Americans say they go online primarily using a smartphone.

Key drivers of mobile video growth

What are the drivers for the increase in mobile video viewing?

The increasing availability of premium content over the top to mobile devices, and consumers’ willingness to watch it on a small screen, is key. Additional services, like Disney+, Apple+, YouTube Red, make even more content available.

Smartphone penetration is key. Already largely adopted by the North America’s and Western Europe, smartphone penetration stands at 104% and 122% respectively. Central and Eastern Europ’s penetration is a whopping 121%. China stands at 114%. And even emerging markets are seeing huge penetration with APAC (excluding China & India) at 114%, the Middle East is at 112%. LATAM 102%, India 85% and Africa 81%. It makes sense more users come online todat now that new, less-expensive, Android phones flood the market and the cost of mobile data drops.

The real new growth comes from emerging markets which saw double-digit growth in mobile phone video share. Ranked from high to low (Y/Y) the regional results are :

Middle East/Africa : 57% ip from 40% (+43% Y/Y)

Japan/Korea: 58%, up from 46% (+26% Y/Y)

Europe: 36%, up from 29% (+24% Y/Y)

Latin America: 33%, up from 26% (+27% Y/Y)

Australia/New Zeeland: 28%, up from 24% (+17% Y/Y)

APAC: 84%, up from 76% (+11% Y/Y)

The Americas: 23%, down from 29% (-21% Y/Y)

Combined, tablet, mobile phones and mobile video took market share away from desktop in every market but the Americas.

Mobile is expected to grow even further. The next few years we will see a major expansion of wireless networks as 5G technology will deploy globally. Furthermore, mobile devices are, especially in emerging countries, often the single screen consumers own.

As such, it is crucial that OTT providers look to the delivery of video to mobile devices as a key pillar of their digital strategy. The user experience should be as clean as the one delivered to connected TVs and computers including ways to easily find the content or recommend the content directly to the viewer, which will help to keep them engaged.

Android is winning the battle for OS Dominance

iOS and Android have dominated the video market for years. iOS has been the dominant player in the early days with the iPhone and iPad defining how a real mobile device should work.
But the times have changed. The share of videos played on Android phones and tablets topped 64% in Q2 2019, up from 56% a year ago, where iOS saw its share slip to 36% from 44%.

Attention span, or the average minutes spent watching video on iPhones and Android phones increased over the past year. iPhones saw a substantial jump of 20% to 22.3 minutes watched where Android phones ros 6% to 16.8 minutes. On iPads and Android tablets average viewing time is relatively stable at 23.8 minutes and 21 minutes.

Regionally Android leads iOS 4-3 with The America, Australia/New Zealand and Japan/Korea being iOS dominant regions and Europe, APAC, LATAM, Middle East/Africa primarily using Android devices

Although Android is winning the battle, the days of being able to roll out an app for a single OS and believe that you had the market covered are gone. Even in iOS strongholds like Australia, New Zeeland, the Americas, Japan and Korea, the increased reliability, ease of use, and lower cost of Android devices are showing its impact. Although iPads and iPhones remain major players in the video market, they do not longer offer significantly superior devices compared to Android. Video providers must have an option for Android users or risk losing customers, particularly in emerging markets.

Engagement Patterns by Device

The screen at hand is the screen used to watch a video. Whether its on a commuter bus or on a holiday flight, we’ll watch that latest episode of Game of Thrones wherever we are and whenever we want. Offline playback, more reliable Wi-Fi, bigger data bundles and content owners’ willingness to go wherever their customers are has pushed an increasing amount of content onto the smallest screen.

As a reminder, video content is typically grouped into:

Short-form video (0-5 minutes long)

Medium-form video (6-20 minutes long)

Long-form video (21-40 minutes long)

Ultra-long-form video (41+ minutes)

More and more, people are watching long-form content on mobile devices where this was, as you’d expected long time dominated by connected TVs. The opposite is also through, more and more short-form video’s are being consumed on connected TVs.

Data shows that the most important screen for video viewing is the one that’s most convenient, whether that convenience is based on proximity, cost, or the robustness of a network. The length of the content doesn’t bring people to different devices anymore and mobile devices are often the only option of consuming the content.

The trend toward mobile-centric video is continuing. Every screen presents opportunities regardless if you own 50.000 short video clips or 500 movies. Expecting your content will be watched on any one screen is a mistake, so make sure to offer the same experience on a six-inch screen as on a 60+ inch screen. Focus on any one screen and you’ll be passing up opportunities to grow your business.
